Changelog
What changed in the calculators, and when. Formula refinements, verification milestones and the data behind every number, dated so you can see the tools are maintained.
Every figure on this site is dated and sourced, and the math is documented on each tool's page. This log records the changes to that math and those numbers over time. Spot something off? Email [email protected] and corrections ship fast.
· Accuracy & verification release
- Automated accuracy suite. The core math of every major calculator is now pinned by worked, hand-checked examples that re-run on every change, so a formula can't quietly drift.
- Income tax & take-home, verified. Cross-checked against a major Canadian tax calculator across provinces and income levels, and matched to the dollar (e.g. $100,000 in Ontario, take-home $74,206).
- CPP timing. Now evaluates every start age from 60 to 70 to find the one that maximises your lifetime benefit for a given life expectancy, not just the 60 / 65 / 70 milestones.
- TFSA room. Contribution room now accrues from the year you turned 18 or became a Canadian resident, whichever is later, so newcomers see the correct number.
- FHSA & RESP planners. Now separate what you contribute from what the account is projected to grow to, with contribution carry-forward handled correctly.
- Mortgage amortization. The 30-year amortization option now appears only where it is actually permitted, insured first-time buyers and newly built homes.
- Retirement drawdown. Refined CPP/OAS start ages and indexation; the OAS clawback flow is verified against CRA rules.
- Rental property & rent-vs-buy. Aligned on a single, consistent after-tax basis so the two sides of each comparison are truly like-for-like.
- Portfolio outcome ranges. Relabelled so the projected range reads honestly rather than implying a guarantee.
- Common questions, inline. Every calculator now shows its most-asked questions and answers right on the page.
· Foundations
- 60 Canadian calculators live. Each with a "How this is calculated" section showing the actual formula and a plain list of what it does not model.
- Everything dated and sourced. Brackets, limits, premiums and reference rates come from the CRA, CMHC, OSFI, Service Canada, FP Canada and the Bank of Canada, and every figure carries an "as of" date. See the methodology for the full source table.
- Annual refresh built in. All Canadian data lives in a handful of files, so each January's new brackets and limits land in every tool at once.
How we keep this honest
Corrections are treated as bugs: when a rule, rate or formula is wrong, it's fixed and dated here, not quietly patched. Rankings and comparison math never depend on referral commissions (see how this site makes money). And the numbers roll over every January when the CRA and others publish the new year's figures.
